6 May 2025

We are pleased to announce that the 15th International Conference on the Early Modern Literatures of North India (ICEMLNI) will be held from Wednesday, 3 July to Sunday, 6 July 2025 at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.

The Academic and Local Committee members are proud to continue the ICEMLNI tradition in offering a meeting place for scholars of the literary traditions of early modern North India in its 15th international iteration. We invite papers spanning a wide variety of fields and perspectives addressing research topics and questions that can be characterised as ’early modern’ (c. 1400-1800 CE) and as North Indian (broadly conceived). In the past, papers on hagiography, oral traditions, textual criticism, poetics, religion, and literary history have been included. Papers have also included a variety of language and literary traditions from North India. In 2025, we hope to continue the productive and enriching diversity of perspectives that we have all benefitted from in the past.

Call for Papers & Registration Dates

We will issue a general Call for Papers by late July 2024. This Call for Papers will include further details about the conference submission deadline, including a finalised date and method of submission. After the conference organisers issue notices of acceptance to qualified papers, we will subsequently announce conference registration for both presenters and attendees.

Delivery Mode

We intend for the 15th ICEMLNI to be a primarily ‘in-person’ conference at the ANU’s College of Asia & the Pacific in Canberra, Australia. However, we recognise the many structural and logistical barriers that prevent international travel for academic conferences. We will provide a live, hybrid/dual delivery mode for online paper presentations to those who cannot travel to Canberra. We intend for this conference to have roughly 70% of attendees in-person with a flexible allowance for 30% of attendees to participate online.

Participation Fees

While the organisers will procure some funding for the conference, many features of the conference will require a participation fee to run. We have differentiated the fee-levels based on in-person vs. online attendance, and a discounted rate for students. The conference fee will cover conference materials, catering (i.e., a conference dinner, lunch, and coffee breaks, etc.), facilities fees, and technology costs. This conference participation fee does not include participant travel, accommodation, or personal consumption (food, etc.).

Old Hindi Reading Retreat (‘Braj Camp’)

For the vast majority of ICEMLNI participants, the resources and time required to travel to Australia is admittedly significant. Because of this, we would like to also offer the opportunity to participate in an Old Hindi Reading Retreat (a.k.a., ‘Braj Camp’) at the ANU’s Kioloa Coastal Campus on New South Wales’ South Coast in the week following the ICEMLNI conference at ANU’s main campus in Canberra. More information on this optional, additional retreat will be provided when registration information becomes available.
